The Blue Heart Project helps bring awareness to the lasting impacts of forced assimilation through Indigenous residential boarding school institutions. These institutions continue to impact the lives of Indigenous people, families, and communities even decades after they closed. The last residential school in Canada closed in 1996, and the last federally operated boarding school in Alaska closed in 1976.
This blue heart design, called Speaking Our Truths, was created by Tlingít Deisheetaan artist Mike Kinville, who resides in Juneau, Alaska, and was gifted to Jamiann S’eiltin, Deisheetaan and owner of Ravens Bones.
